VPN by Google One Review
Application Software Download Free Windows
VPN by Google One, previously only available with Google’s premium 2TB cloud-storage plan, is now free to use on all of its plans. It aims to add an extra layer of security for users when they connect to public Wi-Fi networks and other unsecure online destinations.
Once activated, the service encrypts your device’s network traffic and routes it through a server controlled by Google. This means that your data is protected from hackers and network operators who might be spying on your activity, as well as from other people using the same public Wi-Fi connection (a major privacy concern in many countries). It also prevents sites and apps from connecting to your real IP address, thereby obscuring your location and preventing them from tracking your behavior online.
The app is very simple to set up and uses a straightforward, back-to-basics interface with few settings. There is no option to choose your own server location, which will be a bummer for anyone looking to get more flexibility out of their VPN service. Google has opted to use its own in-house protocol rather than the industry-standard OpenVPN, but says it will add support for IPsec and other protocols in the future.
It’s worth noting that Google One VPN can only protect up to six devices at a time. It’s also unclear on its website where Google One VPN servers are located. This will limit its utility for anyone trying to use a VPN for streaming purposes or to access content that’s not available in their country.
